Like everyone in the Lafayette-Oxford-University (LOU) community, the United Way of Oxford-Lafayette County is adapting to its ever-changing circumstances as more information becomes available regarding COVID-19. The totality of the situation extends well beyond health and safety due to the substantial economic impacts involved.
Currently, one of the primary roles we can play is to publicize information as it becomes available as each day brings a new set of press releases and announcements. As the sheer size and scope of COVID-19's impact continually grows, our organization realizes there is a dire need for large-scale supports that far exceed the capacities of our local nonprofit community. Like many communities, we sincerely hope such support is soon forthcoming. However, at present we must all respond and act as best we can given the information at our disposal.
Utilization of existing nonprofit and community networks will be critical as we seek to address the varying needs resulting from COVID-19 in an efficient, effective manner. As noted above, our local nonprofit organizations do not individually or collectively have the capacity and resources to address the multitude of needs within our community as they continue to grow. In addition, the nature of this particular emergency declaration is quite different than a tornado given the potential to spread the virus in the midst of providing assistance. So, our organizations, businesses, governmental agencies, and residents are seeking to weigh all factors and variables as we seek to discern the appropriate course of action.
As noted above, one prominent and needed role the United Way of Oxford-Lafayette County can play is to help disseminate worthwhile information. So, please be sure to follow our social media pages if you do not already do so as we seek to share posts from our many partners as well as provide worthwhile information from state and federal entities. Links to our primary social media pages are listed below along with several pages developed by local, state, and federal entities in response to COVID-19. In addition, we have provided links to partner Facebook pages as many are posting updates.
As we continue to learn more about COVID-19 and its impacts, please be mindful of your friends, family, neighbors, and co-workers and follow the precautions publicized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mississippi State Department of Health, and others. While we do not yet know the full extent of what is to come or the needs that will result within our community, we do know what we can accomplish by working together. Take care.

United Way of Oxford-Lafayette County COVID-19 Fund:
The United Way of Oxford-Lafayette County (UWOLC) has established a COVID-19 fund to help provide short-term relief to individuals and families living in Lafayette County who have been affected by a loss of wages due to COVID-19. The contributions received through the UWOLC's COVID-19 fund will be granted to a nonprofit organization (or potentially nonprofit organizations) that will provide direct assistance to those impacted on a case-by-case basis.
While the UWOLC is not a direct service provider, the organization helps support several local nonprofit organizations that provide such assistance to Lafayette County residents. The fund will serve to enhance the collective resources that are available to individuals and families in need.
